February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and what better way to celebrate than by teaching little ones the importance of a healthy smile? Dr. Aaberg had the joy of visiting Little Stars Day Care, where I spent time with a wonderful group of 4- and 5-year-olds, sharing fun and educational lessons about oral hygiene.
Learning Through Laughter and Fun
We kicked off our session by talking about what a dentist does. The kids were full of energy and eager to share their thoughts! One little one made us all laugh when, after I asked, “Why do we brush our teeth?” he con fidently responded, “So that I don’t get teeth like my daddy’s!” 😆
We explored some essential oral hygiene basics, including:
✔️ Why we brush our teeth and what happens if we don’t 🦷
✔️ How many times a day we should brush (twice!) and for how long (two minutes!) ⏳
✔️ How much toothpaste to use (just a pea-sized amount!) 🟢
✔️ How to brush properly—“Brush round and round, up and down, up to the gums until you count down.”
✔️ The importance of flossing to keep those tricky spots clean 🧵
Hands-On Practice and a Toothbrushing Dance Party!
Learning is always more fun when we can practice what we’ve learned! We turned up The Toothbrushing Song 🎶 and had a blast brushing along with the beat. The kids loved moving to the rhythm while perfecting their brushing technique.
To reinforce good habits, each child received their own toothbrush and toothpaste kit to use after snack time. Seeing them excited to take care of their teeth was truly rewarding!
The Importance of Early Oral Health Education
Instilling good dental habits early in life sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. By making oral hygiene fun and engaging, we help kids understand that brushing and flossing aren’t just chores—they’re essential parts of self-care. Plus, getting comfortable with dental care at a young age can help prevent dental anxiety in the future.
